Siri and Mobile Optimizing

Siri and Local Search

Some industries evolve quicker than others. I recently watched a documentary on how Jack Daniel’s makes their famous whiskey and it seems today the process is identical to what it was when they first began bottling it. An industry that won’t be able to say the same in 100 years is SEO – or even five years for that matter. With constant innovation in the products used by SEO companies, to the constant revisions of requirements by the Search Engines, it’s not something you can put on autopilot.

Backlinking 101

Backlinking

The More Inbound Links, the Better.

There are a lot of ingredients that go in to a good SEO recipe. In this post we’ll focus on one of the most important; Backlinks.

Backlinking is the process of publishing links on websites that link back to you. They are important because they play a crucial role in increasing your Google PageRank as well as increasing your search engine visibility which will in turn give you what you really want; more traffic for your site.

Building these links can be quite labor intensive and tedious, and not all backlinks are created equally, so make sure you are doing it right.  A link published on a site that is relevant to your content and has a high page ranking will do infinitely more for you that one that doesn’t.

There are a number of ways to get your links on other sites. Here are a few to get you started:

Directory Submissions – These won’t necessarily increase your traffic, but it will increase your Google PageRank. Here is a list of SEO Directories to get you going. Some of these directories require reciprocal links, but keep these to a minimum as you don’t want too many outbound links on your site.

Google Directory

You may have already heard of this Directory.

Rubber band SEO

Rubber band SEO

Rubber band SEO

In a recent Web 2.0 Summit held in San Francisco, Sean Parker talked about how marketing an up and coming website is a lot like pulling back a rubber band and then letting it fly.

This couldn’t be more true when discussing your site’s SEO.

Methodically making posts that contain the same, niched keywords will show up in search engine rankings after you have been adding content for a long time. This can be frustrating because you may not be seeing the results that you hoped for when you are first starting out. I have spoken with various people who go through the exact same frustration and deal with it different ways. After I saw this interview with Mr. Parker, I thought I would write a blog post about it because I thought it was a clever metaphor and many people reading this post probably feel the same way.

Take this article for example. If I started a website and posted this article by itself it would not receive any attention from any of the search engines. But since we have been blogging for quite a while at SeeVolution, our posts sometimes pop up on Google. Admittedly we are not quite where we would like to be, but hey, who is these days?

If you decide to start adding content to help increase your site’s SEO the old fashioned way, remember to stay the course, and don’t quit. If you do, all your work will have been for not.  Stay focused, stay hungry, and eventually your site will climb up in the rankings.

Slow and steady wins the race.

What Construction Workers Taught Me About Time Management

Posted by Chris on November 01, 2011 - 10:12 am
Men at Work

Work Hard. Be Happy

Right now there is a building being built right next to my apartment. I don’t know how many stories it will be, but from the looks of things it will be pretty big. Currently they are in a deep hole (about three stories), which I am guessing will be for parking.

Sometimes I envy the construction workers because they can’t take their work home with them. It is impossible. Nowadays our work can follow us to the furthest corners of the world as long as there is Wi-Fi.

The point is that no one will ever build a building in one day. It is impossible. There are many phases that go into a building project like architecture, engineering, and construction. It is a grand process. But once it’s completed the building looks pretty cool, and all the construction workers can stand there, look at it for a little while and quietly think to themselves: “I built that thing.”

The trick for us geeks and nerds who are glued to our computer screens and smart phones all day is to remember that we can’t build it in a day. We can’t get 50 new clients, beef up SEO, measure analytics, and get a new blog post up all while documenting the entire thing via Facebook and Twitter. Its not scalable. If you try (and many have) you will just burn yourself out and live an unfulfilled life.

Variety is the spice of life. You will be amazed at how much your productivity will increase if you turn off the computer once and a while and actually live. Do something fun; get a hobby,  join a league.

Be like a construction worker.

What do Guest Blog Posting and The Music Industry Have in Common?

Music Duets

Music Duets and Guest Blogging

Duets in the music industry are a lot like guest blogging because it provides an opportunity for each artist to showcase their talents to the other artist’s fans.  Duets usually come from the same genre of music so you won’t see a lot of Le Anne Rimes and Snoop Dogg collaborations the same way you wouldn’t see a lot of wood manufacturers guest post on a cooking blog.

When you put duets into the context of the blogosphere, it starts to make a lot of sense from a SEO perspective. The benefits include a great back link to a site that is already in your industry, interactions and introductions to users from the site you are guest posting to who are already interested in your industry, and meeting a site operator who you may be able to strike up a partnership with or get referrals from.

It is also worth noting that the more guest blog posting you do, the more credible you become, which will make it easier to introduce yourself for future guest posting appearances. The goal is to work your way up to the top of your particular industry via guest blogging so you can do a duet with your favorite singer.

Yet another benefit is receiving the guest social media posts as the person who’s site you are posting on will most likely broadcast your posts through their different social media channels.

SEO: Keeping Up with the Kontentians

SEO Content Creation

Content Creation is King

The best tip to follow for SEO content creation is to follow a balanced approach. Optimized content can go a long way in establishing the trustworthiness of a web page and even help the user in making a buying decision.

Creating content based on SEO tips is what takes care of the ranking. The title tags, description tags, and the keyword tags are paramount.

The latest change in Google’s policy is using it’s own title tags for websites that it deems not fundamental enough in their online marketing approach. We still can’t ignore meta tags, specifically the title tags, when creating SEOed copies for the web. So the only thing to do is develop a balance and write for both the search engines as well as for the users who will be reading them.

People first. Google bots second.

Utilizing your keywords should come second to making sure your users don’t feel like they are in a chemistry class. So once you have  your keywords extracted and your theme with you, it’s time to create a great user-converting kick but copy by:

  • Having the explosion of magnificence right in the title. The title is also the place where the weightage given to a keyword becomes relevant and important. So make sure that you are matching the keywords in the post with each title. The heading can be either tagged by the h1, h2 and h3 (header) tags so that these can be read by Google.
  • Similarly follow the lead of the topic you’ve created and create the body of the SEO content copy accordingly. Make sure you’re using the keywords sufficiently. They shouldn’t appear stuffed. You can even use variations if the original keyword or keyword phrases isn’t working.
  • Optimized content must also be hyperlinked to other web pages. Links going out from your keyword rich article makes a great SEOed page!

Whatever tips you follow, make sure you’re never over stepping the line because ultimately if the user is not satisfied then you may as well have never written the post in the first place. Do not under any circumstances compromise with your content and make it sound forced and in the worst case, automated.
